Tommy Emmanuel, Australia's sensational jazz and world music artist is bringing his signature sounds to the State Theater!
William Thomas "Tommy" Emmanuel was born in Muswellbrook (New South Wales, Australia) in 1955 and is a guitarist, songwriter, and occasional singer. He began his musical journey when he was just 4 years old by learning to play the guitar. He first heard the music of Chet Atkins (legendary American musician, occasional vocalist, songwriter, and record producer) when he was 7 and it inspired him to be a musician. He was fascinated by Atkins' musical style (sometimes referred to as Travis picking) of playing bass lines, chords, melodies and harmonies simultaneously using the thumb and fingers of the right hand, achieving a dynamic range of sound from the instrument. He went on to create a unique and complex fingerstyle technique of guitar picking with no formal music training. He’s had a stellar career both as a session musician and a solo artist and he’s released award winning albums and singles. He’s received many accolades including 2 Grammy Award nominations and in 1999, Atkins presented him with a Certified Guitar Player award, an honor he’s personally bestowed to only four other guitarists (John Knowles, Marcel Dadi, Jerry Reed, and Steve Wariner).
