Rodriguez, Michigan’s sensational folk and rock artist is bringing his signature sounds to the State Theater Portland!
Rodriguez (birth name Sixto Diaz Rodriguez) was born in Detroit in 1942 and is a singer and songwriter of Mexican descent. He began his musical journey in 1967 (under the name Rod Riguez) with his debut single, I’ll Slip Away. He kept honing his craft over the next 4 years and it led to a record deal with Sussex Records (owned by Clarence Alexander Avant; a renowned music executive, entrepreneur, and film producer, sometimes called the "Godfather of Black Music"). His musical style can be best described as a blend of rock, folk, psychedelic rock (a style of rock music - inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture - that attempts to replicate and enhance the mind altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD, by using novelty recording techniques, electronic instruments or effects), and blues. While he started to get mainstream recognition overseas (in Australia, Botswana, New Zealand, South Africa and Zimbabwe), it wasn’t until the release of his Academy Award winning documentary film (Searching for Sugar Man) in 2012 that he started get a flush of media exposure in the US. He’s had a stellar career with 2 studio albums, 6 singles, 3 live albums, and 6 compilation albums.
