Dropkick Murphys, Massachusetts’ sensational Celtic punk artists are bringing their signature sounds to State Theater Portland!
The Dropkick Murphys was formed in 1996 in Quincy (Massachusetts) by lead vocalist Mike McColgan, bassist and vocalist Ken Casey, guitarist Rick Barton, and drummer Jeff Erna. They named themselves after John E. “Dropkick” Murphy; an American professional wrestler and sanatorium owner. The band’s been through many line-up changes and currently consists of Ken Casey (bass guitar, lead vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, bodhran, backing vocals), Al Barr (lead vocals), James Lynch (guitar, backing vocals), Tim Brennan (accordion, mandolin, bouzouki, keyboard, piano, tin whistle, backing vocals, lead guitar), and Jeff DaRosa (banjo, mandolin, bouzouki, guitar, keyboard, piano, harmonica, tin whistle, backing vocals). They cite punk bands like Stiff Little Fingers, Swingin' Utters, The Ramones, The Clash, and Sex Pistols, as well as Irish rock band The Pogues, Greenland Whalefishers, and The Dubliners as their early influences. They also consider AC/DC as their main influence and Ken has said, “I think our goal is to be the AC/DC of Celtic punk rock. The worst thing we can do to the local fans who have stuck with us is to all of a sudden try to be Fall Out Boy with bagpipes.” They’ve had a stellar career with 8 studio albums, 3 live albums, 3 compilation albums, sixteen EPs, 24 singles, and 20 music videos.
